“Imagine, if you will, a production of \u201cThe Seagull,\u201d Anton Chekhov\u2019s so-called \u201ccomedy in four acts,\u201d staged in a Soviet-era Gulag, with the actors so close that you can nearly reach out and touch them. The whole of it is bathed in dark shadows and set on a circle of sand, as if the earth beneath them is always breaking apart into tiny specks of dust. This drama unfolds like a dream that turns into a nightmare just before you wake.”<\/p>\n
