A century-old Jewish tale of demonic possession\u00a0\u2014 yet one that\u2019s just as relevant today."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Igor Golyak reimagines \u2018The Dybbuk\u2019 for the 21st Century<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen it was created it was very much like any play by Chekhov or Shakespeare,\u201d Golyak told me over the phone two days after opening night. \u201cIt made a revolution of some sort and [it\u2019s about] how you translate the essence of that revolution to today\u2019s world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, when you walk into the second-floor performance space, it\u2019s like a time warp. You\u2019re immersed in this old world, a shtetl perhaps, one populated by long ago and faraway characters who are very much present in the here and now. And, at times, literally in your face.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Golyak, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/19\/theater\/our-class-review.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>\u00a0recently called \u201camong the most inventive directors working in the United States,\u201d first encountered\u00a0<em>The Dybbuk\u00a0<\/em>when he was studying at the Schukin Theatre Institute in Moscow. But the idea for this version, which he co-adapted with Dr. Rachel Merrill Moss, came to him about a year and half ago when he visited the Vilna Shul, which was built as an Orthodox synagogue in 1919 primarily by Lithuania immigrants.
